What is biotechnology?
A general description of biotechnology is using living things to create products or to do tasks for human beings. There are four distinct subfields that biotechnology is categorized into. They are:
1. Biomedical Biotechnology is the use of living cells and cell materials to research and produce diagnostic products that help treat and prevent human diseases.
2. Pharmaceutical Biotechnology is the application of biotechnology in researching and producing pharmaceutical products that help treat and prevent human diseases.
3. Plant Biotechnology is essentially genetic engineering related to botanical science. Professionals in this field identify, isolate and transfer genes from one plant organism to another. Plant biotechnologists improve plant production for practical uses, such as producing food, biofuels and fibers. The discipline can be used to make plants more resistant to the effects of nature and disease, as well as yield more fruits or regenerative seeds.
4. Marine and Environmental Biotechnology is the study of how the various organisms and actions of the ocean can be used to provide services and products to us. Marine Biotechnology is providing many new solutions to Industry and Agriculture, including environmentally friendly pesticides and salt-resistant enzymes that are helpful in many industrial applications.
