1. Introduction

MSc. Biotechnology program was carried out at Department of Biotechnology and the diploma MSc was awarded by International University belonged to VNU-HCM.

The focus of this course is on hot topics like genetically modified crops, industrially significant micro-organisms and sustainable development. The course is well equipped with skills and discipline useful in work based environments.

The MSc. Biotechnology course at International University applies the latest molecular techniques and high throughput technologies to biological systems with applications ranging from food and medicines to environment.

Our course content covers a unique combination of plant, microbes and animals as model systems, underpinned by physiology, biochemistry, genetics and computing. The focus of the course is on hot topics like genetically modified crops, industrially significant micro-organisms and sustainable development to name a few. The course is well equipped with generic skills and discipline specific skills which are useful in work based environments.

The course offers opportunities to specialize in either microbial, plant or animal biotechnology with a strong foundation of cell biology, molecular genetics and molecular biotechnology. Student will study a broad base of core fundamental modules and a wide choice of optional modules in semester I and II of year one, allowing him to specialize in the areas which most interest student.

Student will be taught by world class researchers in the discipline and will benefit from our extensive links with companies and institutions working in the field of biotechnologies. Work based placements in special study can provide valuable experience putting his learning into practice and also enhance his employability prospects.

Special study will be work based placements before to determine choosing a trending research for the thesis. Pre-placement: A full program of support is available from the School Placement Team to help students secure a suitable placement. On placement: Students become a candidate of their chosen research field and in the vast majority of cases are paid a salary via project, whilst remaining a fully registered student. Student will have the support of the School Placement Team during his placement, including a visit where appropriate and guidance on making the most of his trending research projects. Post placement: We will support student to integrate back into your course including co-ordinating module choices and projects as appropriate for your program. 

In year two, your Research project is a very important component where you have the opportunity to choose to specialize in plant, animal or microbial biotechnology with applications to agriculture and medicine environment. 2. Program missions

The missions of the MSc. Biotechnology program was carried out the missions of International University and School of Biotechnology in education and training high quality experts in field of biotechnologies. The experts could research in institutions and universities, leader processing in bio-companies, transfer the cutting-edge technologies, and management and make up the policy in extension and development.

3. Program educational objectives

The major purpose of our Master program in Biotechnology is to train and provide highly qualified professionals who possess a solid theoretical foundation and the advanced practical skills in the field of biotechnology. This work force will contribute to the production of valuable industrial products, improving healthcare quality, stimulating economic growth of the country as well as train the young generation who have interests in the field.

The details of program educational objectives are listed as below:

  • After the study completion, students will be equipped with basic knowledge in biochemistry, biosynthesis and protein modification, genetic engineering, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, tissue culture and plant and animal cells.
  • Students will gain an ability to deploy at least one of the important applications of biotechnology that they have been introduced and trained at the IU. These would be the use of molecular methods for diagnosis; crops and livestock breeding and improving crops productivity by using advanced technologies, producing bio-fertilizer and bio-insecticides, cleaning polluted environment using microbial biotechnology, production of food and medicines and performing quality assessment.
  • Students are expected to acquire and master basic skills in biotechnology including microbial and cells culture, tissue culture, molecular techniques, environmental assessment, protein production and purification and recombinant DNA technology.
  • Students are also expected to build up an ability to conduct research in the field of biotechnology.
  • Be able to use English professionally 
  • Students will have an ability to exploit information effectively through the Internet, especially the online database provided by the VNU-HCMC; master office computer software for reports, seminars and presentations or simple calculation; be able to use at least one among the commonly used statistical software to for data analysis and at least one software used in the fields of genetic engineering or bioinformatics.
  • Capable of communicating well and giving good presentations
  • Know how to collect and process information and make scientific decisions
  • Know how to organize works and able to coordinate with co-workers/team members.

4. English proficiency requirement
According to Decision 208/QĐ-ĐHQT-ĐTSĐH on April 26th 2016 on Acceptable English Proficiency Requirement for graduation of Graduate program, all students of both Ms and PhD program are required to submit official evidence of the required level of English language proficiency as following:

a) Having a Bs degree/ or Ms degree at a university at which English is the sole language of instruction; or
b) Having a Bs degree in English language; or
c) Having one of these following certificates taken within the last 2 years: IELTS >= 6.0, TOEFL iBT>= 61, TOEFL ITP >= 500, VNU-ETP >= 276.

5. Administrative method

Entrance exam: The entrance exam is organized each year in October. Candidates are required to take a written exam to test their general knowledge in biology, followed by an interview to test their abilities in communication, self-motivation and English speaking and listening skills. Additionally, a proof of English proficiency must be provided along.

Honor admission: Candidate holding an excellent Bs degree (GPA ≥80/100) and received the degree no longer than a year is automatically accepted to our program without having to take any of the above mentioned exams.

Foreign candidates are not required to take the written exam; however, their study records will be reviewed following by an interview.

6. Accreditation

The Master program is accredited by VNU-HCM in 2009 with the Education and Training Code of 60420201.

7. Benchmarking

The program is built based on the references of the cirriculums of Rutgers University (USA), Oxford University (United Kingdom) and Taiwan Academia Sinica (Taiwan) with modifications to fit with the actual conditions and needs of our countryFaculty of Nursing Technology, Seattle University, USA

8. Expected learning outcomes

Standard output of the Master's program in Biotechnology sector is based on the training objectives and the provisions of ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) in conjunction with the provisions of the National University of HCM.

MSc biotechnology Curriculum indicates the following expected learning outcomes:

  1. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics and science;
  2. An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data;
  3. An ability to have a sense of chemical, biochemical analysis, synthetic approach to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability and sustainability;
  4. An ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams;
  5. An ability to identify, formulate and solve problems in Biotechnology;
  6. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility;
  7. An ability to communicate effectively;
  8. The broad education necessary to understand the impact of biotechnological solutions in a global, economic, environmental and societal context;
  9. A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning;
  10. A knowledge of contemporary issues;
  11. An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern technological tools necessary for biotechnological practice;
  12. A knowledge of probability and statistics, including applications appropriate to the biotechnology program and objectives; and knowledge of mathematics through calculus, basic sciences, Bio-statistics and analytical approach necessary to analyze and design experimental tools and analysis.
